Permanent Hiring Is Growing Again: What Employers Should Do Now

For Employers · Hiring Strategy

For the first time since September 2022, permanent placements are rising, according to KPMG and REC's September 2026 Report on Jobs. London and the Midlands are leading the recovery, and job adverts in logistics and warehousing have been climbing too.

More hiring means more competition for good people. Here is what we would do if we were hiring in the commercial sector right now.

1. Move faster.

Strong candidates rarely wait around. A drawn-out process loses people to quicker competitors.

2. Put the salary in the advert.

Recent data shows fewer than 6 in 10 UK job adverts include pay, down from earlier in the year. Listings that show the number stand out and attract more serious applicants.

3. Hire on skills, not years of experience.

"5+ years required" filters out capable people. Say what the person needs to be able to do.

4. Get specific about the role.

Vague adverts get vague applications. Give the day-to-day, the hours and the working pattern.

5. Use a specialist partner.

When the market is moving, an agency that understands your sector can shorten the process and protect quality.

The market is opening up, and the businesses that hire well now will have the advantage.
